RISK - You can't see it or touch it and it hides behind superficially well run activities. It rears its head when you least expect it and it can be frustratingly difficult to deal with it's consequences. Without doubt all projects have it somewhere, but where?, and effective management of it can mean the difference between success and disaster. No wonder it is the hot project management topic of the decade.
Recognising the importance of risk within projects, the RISK MANAGEMENT SIG was formed within the APM to provide a forum for its debate and for the development of expertise to deal with it. The RISK SIG's mission statement is:
The RISK SIG meets four times a year, January, April, July and October, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in various locations from Bristol to Warwick but often in Central London. The meeting format includes brief reports from section leaders (General Interest; Techniques and Tools; Training) followed by a talk or presentation where one or two speakers will discuss their risk management experiences, will explain a specific technique, or will introduce another pertinent topic of interest. Usually one of these includes a software demonstration to give members the opportunity to gain an appreciation of tools available to support the risk process.
Membership of the SIG is up to 300 and between 50 and 70 interested people attend the quarterly meetings.
The RISK SIG also organises Workshops where a current topic of interest is developed by individual syndicates and then discussed by the whole group. To widen the debate the resultant position on the topic is usually expressed within an article in the APM's magazine, Project (project@fbp.co.uk), and in future also within the new International Journal of Risk Management.
Previous Workshops have been on the following subjects:
The RISK SIG is a recognised leader in this field and has organised the preparation of important publications. These may be downloaded or ordered here.
The Risk Management SIG exists to promote the discipline of Risk Management within the project management fraternity. It meets regularly to discuss Risk Management methodologies and to receive presentations on related matters. For more details contact any of the officers of the SIG. The RISK SIG is the only independent organisation in the UK specialising in Project Risk Management. Its only vested interest is to promote the development of professional project management disciplines. The RISK SIG aims to be a major contributor to the accepted wisdom on Risk Management.
If you need to know about Project Risk Management, then you need the APM and you need the RISK SIG.
